Is Coaching Biblical

The principles of coaching are seen all throughout the Bible and I believe there is a strong biblical basis that supports coaching as a means of renewing the mind and true transformation.

The Power Transformation by the of the Renewing of the Mind
Our Spirit is saved but our mind needs to be continually renewed.
Romans 12:2 “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” NIV

“Conform” means to fashion one’s mind and character.

“World” is a Greek word “aion” – it is in the noun and masculine form – it means “a space of time, a cycle of time”. What was going on at that time? (Instability, weakness, impiety, wickedness, misery, same as today) So, do not be controlled by the thoughts and pursuits of this present time. Do not be controlled by instability, weakness or misery.

“Transformed” is the Greek word “metamorphoo” which is where we get the word “metamorphosis”. Metamorphosis means to make a complete change, as in going from a caterpillar to a butterfly. It is derived from two Greek words that mean “to change after being with” and “changing form in keeping with inner reality.”

“Renewing” is the same word as “transformed.”

The Greek word for “of your mind” is a Greek word that means “reflective thinking.”

In other words…do not fashion your mind and your character to the pattern or the design of this cycle of time that we are living in; instability, weakness and misery. As you are with your own thoughts (awareness without judgement,) make a complete change in your reflective thinking so that your inner reality aligns with who you were originally created to be. The result will be true outward transformation, just like a caterpillar transforms into a butterfly.

The Power of Stable Thinking
James 1:8 “A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.” KJV
The word for “double-minded” in the Greek language means “two souls;” one who wavers.

“Unstable in all of his ways” means “someone who disagrees with himself.”
This is not referring to a hypocrite, but someone who is fickle; without consistency.

The art of coaching is a discovery process of authentic thinking through high quality questions and active listening which allows one to sort out their thoughts and feelings. It brings about stability and consistency as well as opening up opportunities for deliberate action.

The Power of Positive Thinking
Proverbs 23:7 “As a man thinks in his heart, so is he.” NKJV
Your thoughts shape your actions. What you believe about yourself and about the world is mirrored back to you in real life. Coaching provides an opportunity to look at the results of your life as feedback without judgement and to decide which ways of thinking are supporting you or holding you back.

The Power of a Vision
Proverbs 29:18 “Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keeps the law, happy is he.” KJV

The NIV says, “Where there is no revelation, people cast off restraint; but blessed are the one who heeds wisdom’s instruction.”

The word “vision” means “divine communication”, literally “mental sight.”
The word “perish” means “let go” or “dismiss.”

The vision constrains you to your mission and purpose. It holds you accountable to who you are, why you are here and what you are here to do. Your vision is the end result of living your mission and purpose. It is bigger than where you are at this moment. A commitment to your vision keeps you focused on where you are going so that what you want becomes bigger than your fears. It keeps you on track so that you do not dismiss the divine insight about your purpose.

Consider this…if you get in your car, put your seatbelt on, put the keys in the ignition, turn on the car and put the car in drive but you are looking at your belly button, how far will you get without a crash? The answer is NOT VERY FAR! You move in the direction of your vision. What you look at is where you go. Vision is key to living a life of intentional impact.

Coaching offers new perspective and assists you in gaining clear mental sight about your present and future with a fresh outlook. If you take your eyes off of where you are going, you will become easily distracted and get “stuck in a rut.”

The Power of Truth
Psalms 51:6, “Behold, You desire truth in the innermost being, And in the hidden part [of my heart] You will make me know wisdom.” AMP

The word “truth” means “true and lasting.” It has the idea of something that is SURE, STABLE and RELIABLE. It is consistent and dependable. The word “innermost parts” means “the seat of faithfulness.” Another word for faithfulness is authenticity.

Coaching digs down underneath the layers upon layers of masks that you pile on top of the truest essence of who you were created to be. It gets underneath who you have become to unlock who you really are.

Mindsets, Patterns and Behaviors
A dynamic, spiritual life is a life of consistently up-leveling your mindset. When you up-level your mindset, you create new patterns which in turn, create new behaviors.

Fear is a mindset. Faith is a mindset. Forgiveness is a mindset. Resentment is a mindset. Love is a mindset. Joy is a mindset.

Philippians 2:5 states, “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus.” KJV

The meaning of “the mind” in Greek is “to think.” Your job is to think like Christ thought. Further, it means that your inner perspective corresponds with your outer behavior.

What kind of mindset did Christ have? Christ was committed to the vision of his mission and purpose. He was committed to behaving in a way that corresponded with His inner beliefs about what He came to earth to do.

As a woman on her journey to The Rise, you now have an opportunity to do the same. Commit to the vision of your mission and purpose. Behave in a way that corresponds with your inner beliefs so that you can show up in the world fearlessly and make a bigger impact.

You have been summoned to soar! It’s time to rise up! xoxoxo
